Philips creates inspiring, interactive lighting experiences at i Light Marina Bay 2014

Singapore – Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), the global leader in lighting, is providing advanced LED technology to two installations at i Light Marina Bay, Asia’s only sustainable light art installation festival. Philips technology is supporting two interactive works: "BEAT" by design and engineer firm Arup, and "iSWARM" by the Singapore University of Design and Technology (SUTD). Philips is also the festival’s Sustainability Workshop Partner.

An intelligent, connected public lighting infrastructure can enhance the livability of cities by: creating a resource-efficient city, contributing to the safety and security of all citizens, and establishing an attractive, vibrant image. In these ways, connected digital lighting will play an increasingly important role in our cities.


Philips Hue in "BEAT"


With Philips Hue, the world’s leading personal wireless lighting system, the creative team from Arup demonstrates the potential of programmable digital light sources in ever more meaningful ways through its light art installation "BEAT." Arup’s installation is designed to be inclusive, fun and promote sustainability. When people interact with translucent shapes displayed on the lawn, the installation responds visually, pulsating light and intensifying the colours as more people interact.


Philips LED lighting in "iSWARM"


Participating in the festival for the first time, the team from SUTD created a swarm of luminous "sea creatures" which detect passers-by and respond with changing light patterns, illuminating the waters of Marina Bay.



"Innovations in LED lighting have opened a new frontier of possibilities in green design and ultimately how our cities look and feel. i Light Marina Bay provides an opportunity to bring these possibilities into the conversation through interactive exhibits like the one created by our team from SUTD. Our partnership with Philips enabled us to take the exhibit to the next level, and we hope it makes people think about what light can do," said Thomas Schroepfer, Associate Professor and Associate Head of Pillar Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.


SUTD’s work utilizes 1600 color changing LED nodes along 32 strands of Philips Color Kinetics iColor Flex LMX lighting fixtures. The strands are designed to provide extraordinary effects without the constraints of shape or space.


Both exhibits demonstrate how Philips LED solutions can go beyond functional aspects of lighting such as safety, navigation and sustainability to beautify urban landscapes and increase city identity and pride.


Philips at Sustainability Workshop


Co-presented by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Singapore Green Building Council, and supported by Philips, the festival’s sustainability workshop will feature key industry leaders sharing how their innovations improve and inspire lives in urban cities. The Philips speaker, Mieke De Schepper, will share insights on the changing world of lighting and innovative ways of using light to simply enhance people’s lives where they live and work.


The workshop will be held on 26 March from 9 am to 1 pm at the URA Centre.
