She specialises in the field of healthy hair with particular reference to the mechanical (the use of styling appliances and tools on the hair) and visco-elastic properties of hair. This means that she researches the effects of styling appliances and tools on the hair (mechanical) and its response to the effects of moisture and temperature (visco-elastic).
As a key part of the Research & Development team and an expert member of the Philips Haircare Institute, Sima uses her knowledge and extensive research experience to help the technical teams develop haircare appliances that offer a healthier way to style.
Since joining Philips in 1997, Sima has worked on a variety of experiental research projects, continuing the Philips commitment to ongoing product innovation and advanced consumer solutions.
Key projects have included researching the effects of heat and moisture on the hair during styling and hair in relation to fitness and wellbeing. This second project included a collaboration with the Maxima Medical Centre in Eindhoven and explored the extent to which the hair can be a marker for health, e.g. as an indicator of diabetes.
Sima holds a BSc in Physics, an MSc in Material Science and a PhD in Fibre Science and Technology from the University of New South Wales in Australia.

It’s worth investing in a good quality hair straightener such as the Philips ProCare Keratin or Philips SalonStraight Respect straightener.
Choose one with ceramic plates, ionic conditioning and adjustable temperature. Wider plates are great if you have long, thick hair while thinner plates are great for straightening fine or shorter hair.
Also look out for technology - such as Philips EHD technology – that evenly distributes heat across the plates to prevent hot spots.
Andy’s top tips for healthy straightening include:
A good hairdryer is a real styling essential. Choose an ionic dryer – such as the Philips SalonDry AC - with a professional wattage (eg 2000W) and longlife AC motor. Also look out for a hairdryer that has flexible heat and speed settings and a ceramic element to balance the drying heat and the airflow.
Curls are a great way of quickly and noticeably changing your look. Choose a ceramic coated curling set that comes with a variety of attachments such as the 13-piece Philips SalonStylist.
For straight hair with volume, rediscover airstylers such as the Philips Natural Straight. Airstylers such as the Philips Natural Straight also offer a healthier way of styling and are particularly good when used on dry hair. This is because the brushing action helps stimulate the scalp and help distribute existing oil (sebum) through the hair.
Your hair is important but how much do you really know about it? At Philips Haircare, we believe that that only way to love your hair is to really get to know it.
The health of our hair is a good reflection of our inner health.
If we’re in good health, our hair tends to be shiny, strong and lustrous.
In contrast, illness, stress, tiredness and over processing can all leave it looking dull, lifeless and difficult to manage. We call these factors ‘hair aggressors’.
Hair aggressorsLooking after our physical health helps keep our hair looking and feeling beautiful.
Hair grows from follicles in the skin. The part of the hair inside the follicle is the hair root while the protruding part - the part of the hair we see - is called the hair fibre. This fibre is made up of a protein called keratin – a linked together formation of amino acids.
Keratinisation (or the process of conversion to keratin) happens as the cells change their shape as they grow up through the hair shaft and leave the scalp.
Each shaft of hair is made of two key layers of keratin:
1. Cuticle. An outer covering of overlapping keratin scales – these can be compared to overlapping
terracotta tiles on a roof or the scales on the back of a fish.
2. Cortex. A middle layer of the hair fibre consisting of a unique protein. This part gives the hair its
pigment, strength, elasticity. It can be best described as looking like the curly cord of a telephone.
It is the hair shaft’s outermost layer – the cuticle is the hard and resistant layer– that protects it from mechanical and environmental damage.
Looking after this layer is really important – it’s key to having shiny, healthy looking hair.
Before styling
Begin by straightening underneath so clip up the fringe out of the way and then clip each side up. Starting on one side, release a section at the back and clip the rest back up out of the way. Keep the section small, otherwise the straightener won’t reach every strand of hair.
Apply a heat protection spray to the section you are about to straighten. Choose a heat activating protection spray that is specially for your hair type.
Using the Philips SalonStraight Respect, straighten each section from root to tip. Keep it moving smoothly through the hair at all times for an even result.
Lastly, release the fringe. With a thick fringe look like this, don’t try and straighten it all on one go. Take two or three layers of hair instead. Turn the straightener inwards as it moves down the hair to make the fringe fall inwards. The more natural movement and texture you want, the smaller the sections. It’s that simple.
This look starts with a great cut and will work on most hairtypes especially hair that is slightly thick and springy with a natural wave. It’s also an incredibly flattering style for all ages since it frames and accentuates the face.
With this style, don’t be tempted to use too many products as they can reduce the shine. In fact when using a good hair straightener – like the Philips SalonStraight Respect - you will find you won’t need to use a lot of styling products. This is great because you want to keep the hair flexible and soft so you can see and feel the bounce despite its straight look.
For that ‘just left the hairdresser’ result, straighten your hair in small sections. Start close to the root and glide the straightener all the way down to the ends of the hair, keeping it moving at all times. Don’t forget to use the clever Care Touch® setting to restyle throughout the day.
Before styling
Add mousse to freshly washed hair. Make a centre parting, and then use the dryer until the hair is 70-80% dry with the Philips SalonDry AC.
Clip up the top half of the hair out of the way so you can continue blow-drying with a medium size round brush underneath. Wrap a section of the hair around the brush and apply the airflow while half rolling and unrolling hair around the brush. This technique adds a wave to hair without stretching it. When the section is dry, roll it once more fully onto the brush. Allow the hair to cool before releasing it.
Repeat this technique all over the hair underneath, then release the top half of the hair and continue until all the hair is dry.
Loosen the waves with your fingers and then blow-dry on a cool setting. It is really is that easy.
This look works well on all types of mid to long length hair and can help to create movement and body even in fine, slightly damaged hair.
Simply adjust the heat setting to suit your hair type. If you have fine, dry or coloured hair, use a lower setting and always keep the airflow moving. If you blowdry your hair more than once a week then it is a good idea to use a conditioning mask regularly to replace lost moisture and keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.
This look is all about maximizing movement so don’t use too many products. A fist-sized amount of mousse is all you will need if your hair is fine. Mousse is great since it gives body and creates hold without stickiness and works best when used in conjunction with a hair dryer.
Before styling
Add mousse to freshly washed, towel dried hair. Make a centre parting then blow dry all the hair using your fingers to straighten. Lift the hair at the roots for volume.
To keep the volume in the straightened hair it best to start at the top section of the hair. Take a small section, place the tool underneath the area as close to the root as possible. Move the Philips Natural Straight down the hair moving it in an arc. This easy technique helps to add volume as you straighten.
When the top part is done roll it up and clip it on top of the head. This keeps it out of the way and helps set in the volume will you work on the hair underneath.
When all the hair is straightened, simply brush through with a natural bristle brush. Finish with hairspray. It really is that simple.
This look works well on most hair types especially thicker or curly or slightly frizzy hair.
This style is all about hair that is full of life and body so the Philips Natural Straight’s 200°C is the perfect styling temperature to use. If you heat the hair up too much then it will become too flat for this style.
To smooth hair, gently brush from root to tip with the Philips Natural Straight while, to add volume, style in the same way but from underneath the hair.
Before styling
Liberally apply a heat activated protection spray (for wet hair) all over the hair.
Blow-dry all the hair straight with a paddle brush until completely dry.
Straighten the hair in sections starting close to the root.
Glide the straightener smoothly down the hair to the ends. Repeat until all of the hair has been straightened. It’s honestly that easy.
This style is all about straight hair but with movement, bounce and confidence and, of course, lots of shine. An essential component and primary protein in healthy skin, hair and nails, Keratine has recently become a byword for shiny hair. An ingredient in some of the best shampoos, conditioners and styling products available, Philips has now added this essential natural ingredient to its latest straightener. Together with professional features such as sonic vibrations and ionic conditioning, shiny hair looks can be taken to another level.
Use a heat protection spray whenever heat styling to ensure hair stays as healthy as possible.
When straightening, glide from root to tip keeping the straightener moving at all times.
