Beat the haze and other pollutants, allergens and particles for a healthy indoor environment
Singapore – With the haze intermittently hitting Singapore, many will be likely to stay indoors and look for air purifiers that can help to give a breath of fresh air within their homes. Tip #1: Look beyond the haze – identify your long-term needs
When the haze hits, many consumers would jump at buying an air purifier without evaluating their long-term needs. Eventually, the product is chucked away in storage after the season passes. What many might not know is that studies have shown that the air we breathe indoors can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air*.

| Do you have children, elderly or people with chronic respiratory allergies or heart diseases living at home? | Choose an air purifier that is able to effectively remove particles as small as 20 nanometers, 2,500 times smaller than the width of your hair. This includes harmful gases like TVOC, common airborne allergens from activities like cooking or cleaning, bacteria and virus – keeping you and your family better protected against illnesses like the common cold and flu. |
| Are you pregnant? | An air purifier can remove harmful air substances that affect pregnancy and healthy fetal development, such as carbon monoxide, fumes from paint and household cleaners, particulate matter and ozone present in the air that we breathe around the home. |

Tip #2: Haze 101 – what your air purifier needs to be able to filter out
On any regular day, the main air pollutants are sulfur and nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, organic compounds and particulates. Photochemical reactions involving oxides of nitrogen and organic compounds upon emission produce ozone which is also a key air pollutant in the environment. During the haze, the key air pollutant of concern is particulate matter (PM) which can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat in healthy individuals. Continuous exposure can cause respiratory symptoms and aggravate sufferers of heart or lung disease. Local studies have shown a correlation between haze periods and increased hospital admissions for respiratory diseases*.
Hence, it is important that your air purifier comes equipped with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, which gets rid of particles of 0.1 to 0.3 microns in size. This means that the larger PM2.5 particles can be filtered out easily. Consumers should avoid selecting ionizers as they are only effective in removing bacteria and viruses but have no effect on removal of particulates.
