Invest in Cleaner Air

Beat the haze and other pollutants, allergens and particles for a healthy indoor environment

Beat the haze with Philips’ range of air purifiers for every lifestyle and budget

Singapore – With the haze intermittently hitting Singapore, many will be likely to stay indoors and look for air purifiers that can help to give a breath of fresh air within their homes. Before jumping on the bandwagon, Philips shares an arsenal of tips on how to stay healthy by choosing a product that best suits your lifestyle and budget, making the most out of your investment.

Tip #1:  Look beyond the haze – identify your long-term needs

When the haze hits, many consumers would jump at buying an air purifier without evaluating their long-term needs. Eventually, the product is chucked away in storage after the season passes. What many might not know is that studies have shown that the air we breathe indoors can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air*.

The air that we breathe is essential to our health and overall well-being. This is especially so for children and the elderly who are more prone to developing health risks related to the quality of air. At Philips, we combine our expertise in healthcare and consumer insights to develop innovative product solutions that empower consumers to lead a healthier life at home

There are a number of factors that you should consider before making the investment.

Questions to ask:

Areas to consider:

Do you have children, elderly or people with chronic respiratory allergies or heart diseases living at home?

Choose an air purifier that is able to effectively remove particles as small as 20 nanometers, 2,500 times smaller than the width of your hair. This includes harmful gases like TVOC, common airborne allergens from activities like cooking or cleaning, bacteria and virus – keeping you and your family better protected against illnesses like the common cold and flu.

Are you pregnant?

An air purifier can remove harmful air substances that affect pregnancy and healthy fetal development, such as carbon monoxide, fumes from paint and household cleaners, particulate matter and ozone present in the air that we breathe around the home.

Do you smoke?

Choose an air purifier that has a HEPA filter which is specifically designed to eliminate smoke and tobacco pollutants. An integrated active carbon filter can help to remove odor and harmful gases.

Do you have pets?

Choose an air purifier which has a high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) which measures the volume of clean air that is produced by an air purifier per minute. A high CADR allows the unit to filter indoor contaminants like gases, fine dust, pollen, smoke and pet hair with speed and efficiency.

How big is your home?

Air purifiers come in different sizes and capacities and it is important to make sure that yours matches the size of your abode for it to be effective.

Are you a light/heavy sleeper?

Air purifiers have different special built-in features – some operate more silently than others and have a dedicated sleep mode with lights that can be dimmed. It is important to choose one that best suits your sleeping habits.

Tip #2: Haze 101 – what your air purifier needs to be able to filter out

On any regular day, the main air pollutants are sulfur and nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, organic compounds and particulates. Photochemical reactions involving oxides of nitrogen and organic compounds upon emission produce ozone which is also a key air pollutant in the environment. During the haze, the key air pollutant of concern is particulate matter (PM) which can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat in healthy individuals. Continuous exposure can cause respiratory symptoms and aggravate sufferers of heart or lung disease. Local studies have shown a correlation between haze periods and increased hospital admissions for respiratory diseases*.

Hence, it is important that your air purifier comes equipped with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, which gets rid of particles of 0.1 to 0.3 microns in size. This means that the larger PM2.5 particles can be filtered out easily. Consumers should avoid selecting ionizers as they are only effective in removing bacteria and viruses but have no effect on removal of particulates.

Tip #3:  Easy as 1, 2, 3 – air purifiers for every budget and need

Philips has a wide range of air purifiers featuring innovative technology, such as VitaShield Intelligent Purification System (IPS) on selected models which monitors and automatically adjusts the air quality in your room. Philips also offers 2-in-1 solutions that combines the benefits of an air purifier and a dehumidifier, a versatile option that not only removes harmful particles in the air but keeps moisture out as well.  Newer models also feature Philips’ AeraSense technology, an advanced sensor that accurately measures PM2.5 particles and provides you with instant numerical feedback to for added control of your indoor air-quality in real-time.

All Philips air purifiers contain HEPA filters that will remove PM2.5 particles and keep you well protected from the haze.
