With new technologies it has become easier and more pleasant to take multiple readings. However, in most cases this is not necessary. Multiple factors will affect your reading:

• Probe placement
• The time of day
• Variation in body temperature due to physical activity or illness
• The temperature of the ear itself which can, for example, be influenced by wearing a cap or lying on a pillow
