What do the symbols on my Philips Series 5000 shaver mean?

    Published on 14 October 2025

Your Philips shaver uses symbols, icons, and other signals to give you essential information about how to use and maintain the shaver.

Note: this article is only for the Philips 5000 Series shaver. If yours differs from the information below, go to the relevant article for your shaver.

    Plug and arrow

A small symbol of a power plug with an arrow below it means that the shaver cannot be used when connected to a power source.

Disconnect your shaver from the power source before switching it on.

    3 water drops

A symbol with 3 water drops or droplets means that your shaver needs cleaning. This icon will appear automatically after every shave.

Clean your shaver using the instructions provided in the user manual (Tip: the user manual is also available online).

    Crescent-shaped icon

Along with the three drops, the blue crescent-shaped icon above it starts pulsing when the cleaning is in progress.

If you remove the shaver from the Philips Quick Clean Pod or press the on/off button during the cleaning program, and the icon starts flashing slowly, it means that the cleaning process was interrupted before completion.

To continue the cleaning program, place the shaver back in the cleaning pod within 4 seconds. If this timeframe has passed, the cleaning program needs to be restarted by pressing the on/off button of the shaver again.

    Horizontal line

A single horizontal bar or line indicates that your shaver's battery is low.

Charge your shaver by connecting it to a power source.

When your shaver is charging, the lines will fill from the bottom, first flashing and then turning solid, until all the lines light up and the shaver is fully charged.

    Padlock

When the travel lock is activated, a small padlock symbol appears on the shaver handle. This prevents the shaver from turning on automatically during travel or storage.

Refer to the user manual (also available online) for information regarding disabling and enabling the travel lock.
Tip: you can enable or disable the travel lock by holding down the power button for approximately 5 seconds.
