If it is the first time using your Philips grill, it may produce some smoke. This is completely normal.
Smoke comes out of my Philips grill when I turn it on.

If it is not your first time using the grill, please check:
That there is no food stuck between the plates
That there is no fat on the plates
If you have a table grill, check if the drip tray contains water. You can find the drip tray under the grilling plate.
